Maj. Gen. Thomas S. James

Major General Thomas S. James, Jr. was commissioned as an Armor Officer through ROTC at The Citadel in 1985. As a Lieutenant, he served as a Tank Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer in the 3rd Battalion, 37th Armor at Fort Riley, KS.
Following the Infantry Advanced Course, he served as the Assistant Brigade S-3 (Plans Officer) with the 3rd Infantry Division in Aschaffenburg, Germany. After participating in Operations Desert Shield / Desert Storm, he commanded Alpha Company, 4-66 Armor and Charlie Company, 2-68 Armor. He then served as Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, 1st Armored Division in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. He again served with the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany as Division G-3 (Plans Officer); Battalion Operations Officer, 1-64 Armor; and Brigade Operations Officer, 2nd Brigade. He became the Chief, G-3 Plans, V Corps, before commanding 1st Battalion, 37th Armor during its preparation for and deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom I.
He then served as G-3, 1st Armored Division in Baghdad. He was the Chief, Command Planning Group, Headquarters, TRADOC at Fort Monroe, VA, and then took command of the 4th Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, where he commanded for nearly three years, including another OIF rotation. He next became the Chief of Staff, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, GA; Commandant, Armor School, Fort Benning, GA; the Deputy Commanding General – Maneuver, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, TX; the Director of the Mission Command Center of Excellence at Fort Leavenworth, KS; and most recently, was the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Major General James graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) and the National War College, Fort McNair, Washington, DC. He earned a Masters Degree in Advanced Military Arts and Science from the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS), and a Masters of Science in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University.
He has served as the Commander of the 7th Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, since August 2015.
