CSM, 7th Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington


Command Sgt. Maj. Samuel G. Murphy assumed responsibility of the 7th Infantry Division on 15 October 2013. The 7th Infantry Division is responsible for the training, deployment readiness, and health and welfare of over 15,000 Soldiers comprised of seven Brigades: 2 ID DIVARTY, 2-2 SBCT, 3-2 SBCT, 16th CAB, 17th FAB, 555th EN, and 201st BfSB located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington..

Prior to this assignment he was the Command Sgt. Maj. for 3-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team where he was responsible for the training, health, and welfare of over 4,200 Soldiers and family members, both at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and during Operation Enduring Freedom 11-12, in addition to his responsibilities as the senior enlisted advisor to the Brigade Commander.

He has served in several key leadership positions throughout his career, to include Section Sergeant, Infantry Mortar Leader Course Instructor, Platoon Sergeant, Drill Sergeant, First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major for 1-23 Infantry, Command Sgt. Maj. for 1-38 Infantry, and Command Sergeant Major for 3-2 SBCT.

His major deployment history includes: Operation Iraqi Freedom 2005-2006; Operation Iraqi Freedom 2009-2010; and Operation Enduring Freedom 2011-2012.

His awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (2 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), NATO Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (6 OLC), Valorous Unit Award, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Afghanistan Campaign Medal (1 Campaign Star), Iraqi Campaign Medal (1 Campaign Star), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 4), Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 6), NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Expert Infantryman's Badge, the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, the German Marksmanship Award (Schuetzenschnur in Silver), Ranger Tab, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Drivers Badge. He is also a recipient of the Order of Saint Maurice.
