DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY
Northwest Aviation Operations
160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment
Joint Base Lewis-McChord

The Department of the Army at Joint Base Lewis-McChord announces the release of an Environmental Assessment and draft Finding of No Significant Impact for aviation training to be conducted off the military installation in western Washington and northwest and north central Oregon. This action by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment includes aerial refueling, terrain following, and low level maneuver operations. The low level operations will occur mostly over and in the vicinity of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Training is conducted by Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters and refueling includes Hercules fixed-wing aircraft. The aviation activities will produce short term recurring noise affects. Air emissions will increase over the existing baseline conditions but because the emissions are spread over a large geographical area they will have minimal impact. There will be some noise and visual impacts to recreational activities. Mitigation measures implemented will reduce affects to wildlife. The Environmental Assessment and draft Finding of No Significant Impact are now available for public review and comment. Copies of the document can be accessed at
