Public Works (PW) Dig Permit

About PW Dig Permit:

  • Digging permits are issued by PW to ensure safety from damage to underground utilities and protection of cultural resources. Per Joint Base Lewis-McChord Reg. 200-1, a digging permit is required for all digging on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Requestor's Responsibility:

Dig Requestor is responsible for marking proposed dig site with white paint and will thereafter be responsible for maintaining all marked color lines in accordance with national standards as they were laid down by the UULC and other utility owners for life of the dig permit.

Non-maintenance of marked color lines will result in the need for a new dig permit request.

National Utility Standards markings:

  • White - Proposed Excavation
  • Pink - Temporary Survey Markings
  • Red - Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit & Lighting Cables
  • Yellow - Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum or Gaseous Materials
  • Orange - Communication, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables or Conduit
  • Blue - Potable Water
  • Purple - Reclaimed Water, Irrigation & Slurry Lines
  • Green Sewers & Drain Lines

Locator's Responsibility:

The Utilities Underground Location Center (UULC) and other utility owners are responsible for the initial color markings of all underground utilities located within the Requestor's white proposed dig site. Markings will show the proper national standard colors.

To avoid multiple...

  • To avoid multiple locates and wait times for a single project, we recommend that you package your digging sessions to occur on the same date and time. Each general contractor and each sub-contractor must have a digging permit for each site.

Range Control

Dig Permit does not:

  • Acquiring a digging permit does not constitute an agreement with Range Control for scheduling or obtaining clearance to enter the site or location.

For fence and satellite dig permits, Residents can...

  • Residents can attain the permit process by contacting their Housing Office at 253-912-3500 between the hours of 0800 - 1730 Monday - Friday.
  • As a service to our customers, PW will conduct all internal coordination and review of the dig project on behalf of the customer.
Service Members & Contractors

Service Members & Contractor should...

  • Service Members and contractors should begin the permit process at least five business days prior to the scheduled digging event. The process begins by supplying the required information to the PW permit desk (Building 2044, Door #3).
